Nice Radiohead vid

Filed under: Music — Mike Laurie @ 4:46 pm

I’m pretty late to this one, it was posted about two weeks ago. It’s a video for Radiohead’s Jigsaw Falling Into Pieces and it’s by Adam Buxton (from Adam and Joe). He’s clearly a better director than he is a comedian. They strapped web cams to cycling helmets. It’s a nice vid but it must have cost them about 20 quid, they must be skint after giving away all those albums.

Good example of a big brand hjacking prosumer culture?

Digg-like sites sprouting up

Filed under: Trends & Insight — Mike Laurie @ 4:42 pm

For anyone that doesn’t know about Digg, it’s a social news site where people can swarm around news posts and bump them up or down in popularity. Digg has around 20 million unique visitors every month, so although it isn’t on a par with Facebook’s 30m, it’s getting there.

It seems that it’s become the blueprint for a tonne of different sites that do a similar thing. Chictini is doing it for fashion and soon, using Fraxi it will be possible to create your own in a couple of clicks (apparently).

Here comes another bubble

To call it funny would be generous but it’s worth a watch. There was a whole load of nonsense about this vid infringing someone’s copyright but that’s been sorted out now.

Since when did it become acceptable to advertise sex toys during prime-time TV?

Filed under: Advertising — Mike Laurie @ 3:26 pm

Since 9.50pm, Tuesday night, just before one of those M&S ads that are getting way too tired but still manage to make your mouth water. During Gorday ‘fucking’ Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares in which he somewhat accurately described an entrepreneurial maitre-de as a “fat idiot” and “a weak man”. I’m not talking about Ramsay, it was the advert for a new product by Durex which can only be described as a vibrating cock ring. I was online at the time (I’m a multi-channel grown-up, after all) so, I had to look online at durex.co.uk. The web site took about 50 seconds to load up and it wasn’t a large file size. This indicated that there was a very large number of people taking a look at the same time. Could this make advertising sex toys on prime-time TV acceptable? I doubt it, from a buying perspective, they did great, Ramsay loves to use the word ‘fuck’ a lot. Which tends to suggest that the audience is less likely to be shocked. Of course, this doesn’t mean to say they are going to purchase a vibrating cock ring.

The concept is great and they keep it very much on the monogamist side with phrases on their site like ’spicy twosomes’ and the simple fact that the thing is shaped like an engagement ring. Of course, the ad itself is totally positioned around monogamy and marriage.

It’s a shame they didn’t get their new web site sorted in time, the one that’s up at the moment is total crap.

Here’s the ad:

UK government loses more data

Another loss of data by the UK government. Why the hell are they not transferring this data in some kind of online encrypted and secure format? It seems ridiculous to send discs off to 3rd party suppliers, even if they ARE password-protected.

Email is like so not cool anymore

Filed under: Trends & Insight — Mike Laurie @ 3:11 pm

According to a report by Pew Internet, email just isn’t doing it for US teens these days. Girls are blogging more than boys and boys prefer to watch videos but despite all the virtual connected-ness these days, the land line and a good old face-to-face natter is still king of the communication channels for US youngsters.

Two-thirds of kids are prosumers (as Alvin Toffler would have said) and are making stuff i.e. web pages, videos, images, photos, blog posts, music.
